What is onion skinning?
Onion skinning shows faint ghosts of the neighbouring frames underneath the one you're drawing. The name comes from the thin sheets animators stacked on a lightbox. The purpose is single: to see where the new drawing belongs relative to the last one.
Why it's indispensable
Memory does not remember movement. Draw without seeing the previous frame and hands grow, torsos drift, lines thicken — and on playback everything jitters. Onion skin exposes that drift the moment it appears. It matters most when building a loop: seeing both the previous frame and the first frame while you draw the last one is what makes the loop close without a seam.
How many frames to show
For simple motion a single previous frame is enough; more turns the canvas into soup. Drawing a complex arc, showing two frames back and one forward makes the overall curve visible. Most tools colour the ghosts: past frames reddish, future frames greenish. That code lets you read direction at a glance.
When to switch it off
Turn it off for colour and fills. Ghosts are drawn semi-transparent, so they contaminate the colours underneath and you misjudge your values. Turn it off for playback too: onion skin left on smooths the perceived motion and hides the real rhythm from you.

Does onion skin affect the exported file?
No. Onion skin is a drawing aid rendered on screen only; it never enters the saved frame or the exported video. If ghosts appear in your export, they were drawn as an actual layer.
Why are the ghosts different colours?
So you can tell past from future. The common convention shows earlier frames in a warm tint and later frames in a cool one, letting you read the direction of the movement instantly.
Can you animate without onion skin?
You can, but it's hard. Experienced animators sometimes switch it off on purpose to stop the line from getting over-tidy and to keep a natural wobble. If you're starting out, leave it on.
How many frames of onion skin should I show at once?
One or two frames on each side is usually enough — more than that turns the canvas into visual noise and makes it hard to tell which ghost belongs to which frame. Increase the range only for slow, subtle motion where you need more context.
Does onion skin work the same going backward and forward?
Yes — most tools, including Kıpırtı, show both the previous and next frames by default, each in its own tint, so you can check the motion is smooth in both directions, not just coming from the past.
Can I adjust the opacity or strength of the ghost frames?
Where the option exists, lowering opacity helps when the ghosts feel distracting on a busy drawing, and raising it helps when you're struggling to see faint linework. There's no universally correct setting — adjust it to what your current scene needs.
Does onion skin slow down the app on longer animations?
It can on very long, detail-heavy sequences, since extra frames need to render every time you draw. If performance drags, try reducing the number of ghost frames shown rather than turning the feature off entirely.
Is onion skinning the same thing as tracing?
No — tracing copies a shape exactly, while onion skin just shows you where the previous drawing was so you can judge spacing and timing as you draw something new. The ghost is a reference, not a stencil.
Should onion skin include every layer, or just the current one?
Usually just the layer you're actively animating — showing every layer's ghosts at once clutters the view with elements that aren't changing. Some tools let you limit onion skin to a single layer for exactly this reason.
Does onion skin help with looping animations specifically?
Very much — it lets you see your first frame ghosted behind your last frame, so you can check the end connects smoothly back to the start before exporting. Without it, loop seams are easy to miss until you play the file back.
Why do my ghost frames sometimes look identical to the current frame?
That usually means you're on a “held” frame — animation on twos or threes repeats a drawing across several frames, so the neighbouring frame is genuinely the same artwork, not a rendering glitch.
Is onion skin useful for frame-by-frame cleanup, or just rough sketching?
Both — during rough sketching it helps you judge motion and spacing, and during cleanup it helps you keep line weight and proportions consistent from frame to frame as you redraw over the rough lines.
Do professional animators still use onion skin with digital tools, or is it a beginner crutch?
They still use it constantly — it's not a beginner-only feature. Studios rely on onion skinning (and its close cousin, the light table it's digitally modeled on) at every skill level, because judging motion between two static frames is genuinely hard without seeing them overlaid.
