GIF, MP4 or WebM: which should you use?

Once the animation is finished, the question is which format to save it as. The answer depends entirely on where it's going. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of the four common formats, and which one is right in which situation.

GIF: plays everywhere, costs a lot

GIF's single advantage is universality: it plays and auto-loops in messaging apps, forums, everywhere. The price is steep — it carries at most 256 colours, so smooth gradients band, and it produces far larger files than video for the same footage. For flat-coloured drawings on a limited palette it's still a perfectly good choice.

MP4 and WebM: small files, real colour

Video formats carry millions of colours and can store the same animation at a tenth of GIF's size. MP4 is the compatibility king: it plays on every device and platform. WebM compresses better and supports transparency, but can trip up older devices and some editing software. Uploading to social media, choose MP4; embedding on a website, WebM makes sense.

If you need transparency, the options narrow

For an animation with a transparent background, GIF gives you only hard-edged, one-bit transparency, so edges come out jagged. WebM supports transparency properly, and APNG offers soft transparency and full colour but produces large files and doesn't play everywhere. WebM for a website, APNG for embedding in a single app, is usually the right answer.

Frequently asked questions

Why are GIF files so large?

GIF stores every frame as a separate image and doesn't use the modern compression that predicts motion between frames. Video formats record only the regions that change; the difference is often more than tenfold.

Why do I get MP4 on my phone but WebM on my computer?

Browser support for video recording differs. MP4 recording arrived in browsers relatively recently, so older versions fall back to WebM automatically. The content is the same; only the container and compression change.

Can I export without quality loss?

For frame-by-frame drawings, yes: APNG and GIF are lossless. MP4 and WebM use lossy compression, though at a high bitrate the difference isn't visible. On crisp line art, lossy compression mostly shows as slight blurring around the outlines.
